Online shopping scams involve scammers posing as legitimate online sellers, either with a fake website or with a fake advertisement on the site of a genuine retailer. While many online sellers are legitimate, sadly scammers can use the anonymous nature of the Internet to scam unsuspecting shoppers. The typical shopping scam starts with a fake website, a mobile application or, increasingly, a social media advertisement (a BBB study found that 40 percent of the online shopping scams reported to the organization originate from Facebook or Instagram).
